'Green Zone' in Iraq Changes in Name Only

Baghdad's "green zone" is the large swath of territory in central Baghdad that was the headquarters of the U.S.-led occupation authority. It has been re-dubbed the "international zone" now that the occupation authority has left. But it remains the heavily guarded site of the American military command and the new U.S. embassy. NPR's Emily Harris reports.

Iraq Reopens Embassy in U.S.

Iraq's new ambassador to the United States reopens her country's embassy in Washington, ending a decade in which there were no U.S.-Iraq diplomatic relations. In a brief flag-raising ceremony, Ambassador Rend Rahim said Iraq has "assumed a new sovereignty." Among the guests were Iraqi-Americans who had come to the embassy as protesters during the Saddam years. NPR's Michele Kelemen reports.

The Pentagon announces the formation of a military tribunal to preside over the first trials of terror suspects held at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Powell Visits Sudan, Refugees

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell visits a refugee camp and meets with government officials in Sudan. Powell says the discussions produced assurances from the Sudanese government that it would combat Arab militias that have been raping and murdering black African villagers. Saddam, Aides in Iraqi Custody

Saddam Hussein and 11 senior officials of his deposed regime are transferred into the legal custody of the Iraqi interim government, though they remain guarded by U.S. forces. NATO to Increase Troop Levels in Afghanistan

NATO has announced that it will increase its troop presence in Afghanistan to help provide security for elections set for September. But the number of troops being discussed would not bring NATO forces to even the minimum number that the United Nations and the Afghan government estimate would be needed. Human rights groups welcome NATO's announcement, but with a great deal of skepticism, noting that the alliance has failed to live up to its previous commitments in Afghanistan. NPR's Vicky O'Hara reports.
