Afghans Adjust to Loss of Antiquities Collections

Decades of war have destroyed Afgan museums, many of which contained artifacts from the Paleolithic era, the time of Alexander the Great, and from 7th century Buddhist civilizations. Today, most of the exhibits on display are merely photographs of what was once one of the most important collections of antiquities in Asia. NPR's Ivan Watson reports from Kabul.

Bombs Hit Marines, Iraq TV Office

Separate car bombs kill eight Marines near Fallujah and at least seven people at the Al Arabiya television office in Baghdad. The U.S. military says an offensive to seize Fallujah and other insurgent strongholds has not yet begun, but daily operations are more intense. NPR's Emily Harris reports.

A Conversation with an Iraqi Police Officer

Earlier this week guerrillas, dressed as policemen, ambushed and killed about 50 newly trained Iraqi soldiers. On Thursday, 11 Iraqi National Guardsmen were killed. NPR's Scott Simon talks with Ismail Husayn Ali Al'ahbabi, who has been a police officer in Baghdad for nearly 20 years.

Bin Laden Appeals to Voters

On Friday -- for the first time in more than a year -- Osama bin Laden appeared in a videotaped message to the United States. Bin Laden appealed directly to the American people to change American policies in the Middle East. He also threatened more attacks if those policies are not changed. NPR's Mike Shuster reports.

Hungary Hit by Paprika Ban

Hungary bans the sale of paprika after health officials find that products distributed by three of the country's leading paprika companies contained illegal amounts of the mold aflatoxin. Paprika is integral to traditional Hungarian cuisine, and difficult to substitute. NPR's Melissa Block talks with Kalman Kozma, director of Budapest's famous Gundel restaurant.

Video Bolsters Claim of Post-Invasion Looting of Explosives

NPR's Alex Chadwick talks to NPR's Eric Westervelt about the reported disappearance of several tons of explosives from sealed munitions bunkers at a site north of Baghdad called al-Qaqaa. The incident has become a major issue in the waning days of the presidential campaign. A newly released video from embedded journalists in Iraq shows U.S. troops visiting the site after the fall of Saddam Hussein, and finding at least some of the seals intact.
